Why this module matters

  • Shows why fixed plans break down in complexity

Understand the limits of milestones and targets when outcomes can’t be predicted or controlled.

  • Introduces wayfinding as an alternative to planning

Learn to navigate by direction rather than fixed destinations, adjusting your course as conditions change.

  • Gives you a practical way to make progress

Use Safe-to-Fail Experiments to learn, adapt, and build momentum without needing full certainty upfront.

Learning outcomes

A detailed breakdown of the main learning outcomes for this module

  • Recognise the difference between travel planning and wayfinding in complex projects

  • Apply a wayfinding approach in the creation of a provisional vision of the future

  • Understand the relevance of experimentation in complexity

  • Design a portfolio of safe experiments of your own

Practise with hands-on exercises

In this exercise kit, you will describe a stubborn challenge of your own, set a direction of travel and the edges you must not cross, then design a portfolio of small, safe experiments to test and bring them to your team for reflective feedback that helps you simplify, diversify, or sharpen them.
