Why this, why now
You don't need another course on climate theory.
Instead, you need to make better decisions under pressure, with incomplete information, shifting regulation, and no textbook answer, then get the people above you to back the call. New corporate sustainability reporting and due diligence rules are raising the bar faster than most training can keep up. This course gives you practitioner-built tools you can use on Monday, not more terminology. We call it Working in Complexity: a systems-thinking approach to adaptive leadership grounded in the Cynefin Framework and sense-making, and built around the mindsets and practices you need to act on both.
Who it's for
For whoever just got handed the complexity
It's built for sustainability analysts, ESG consultants, policy officers and project managers working inside a corporate team, a consultancy, an NGO or the public sector. Self-paced and modular by design, so it fits around the job you already have.
Handed sustainability, without the manual
You know CSRD and CSDDD are coming, or you've just been promoted or moved into a role where they're suddenly your problem. You need the framework fast, not a semester of theory.
"I know the regulation. I don't have a framework for the calls it's about to force me to make."
You need people above you to actually act
You can see the risk and the opportunity clearly. Getting a manager or a board to treat it as core business, not a side project, is the part nobody trained you for.
"I can read the regulation fine. Getting leadership to act on it before it's mandatory is the hard part."
You want proof, not a DIY reading list
You could ask an AI or piece this together from free content and a university short course. What you can't get there is expert curation and a peer network of people doing the same work.
"I can learn the theory for free. What I can't find for free is something that actually counts."
What you'll build
Three core capabilities in complexity
Read the problem correctly
Before you can solve a problem, you need to know what kind it is. Learn to tell a wicked problem from a complicated one — and stop applying the wrong tool.
Map what's really driving the system
See the tipping points, feedback loops and leverage points that a straightforward checklist misses — and design interventions that shift conditions, not just symptoms.
Act before the picture is complete
Trade travel-planning for wayfinding: build a portfolio of safe-to-fail moves and simple rules you can act on now, with the evidence to show why.
Inside Adaptive Leadership for Complexity
Six core modules. One certificate.
Each module runs 2–3 hours self-paced (3–4 as a cohort): a practitioner podcast, a short core lesson, a self-directed exercise, and a scenario-based assessment.
Core outcomeTell which problems respond to expertise and which don't, so you stop reaching for the wrong playbook.
Individual exerciseNotice your default reaction when a problem lands on your desk, and spot the pattern behind it.
Team exerciseMap a live challenge from your own work onto a 5-dimension complexity spider chart, then compare and discuss with your team.
Core outcomeSort a messy situation into the right Cynefin domain — clear, complicated, complex or chaotic — and match your response to it, not divide it along the org chart.
Individual exerciseMap one of your own live challenges onto the Cynefin framework, then journal on which domain drains your energy and which comes naturally.
Team exerciseShare your mapped challenge with your team, invite their questions and advice, then swap a "mismatch confession": a time your approach didn't fit the domain.
Core outcomeRead a system as a landscape, spot the attractors and boundaries keeping it stuck, and find where a small shift changes everything.
Individual exerciseMap your own landscape of stuckness.
Team exerciseBring your map to the team, uncover what's really holding the situation in place, then agree on one concrete next move and stress-test it before anyone commits.
Core outcomeReplace a 40-page process with a small set of Min Specs that give you room to act.
Individual exercisePick a system you're over-managing, separate the boundaries that truly matter from the ones that just make you feel in control, and design one simpler rule to test.
Team exerciseTake a live team challenge and cut your rulebook down to the 3-5 minimum rules that still protect the purpose, then stress-test them together.
Core outcomeTell linear risk from fat-tail risk, and reframe uncertainty as something you can act on, not just report.
Individual exerciseMap a real uncertain situation in your own life as both threat and possibility, and see what shifts when you hold both frames at once.
Team exerciseRun Future Backwards on a live climate challenge with your team: trace the path to today, then map a wildly good and a wildly bad future back to the present.
Core outcomeTrade a fixed roadmap for wayfinding, and design experiments you can learn from instead of ones that have to succeed.
Individual exerciseDraft a portfolio of safe-to-learn experiments for a live challenge, using five tests: cheap, sideways, parallel, hypothesis-driven, easy to amplify or kill.
Team exercisePresent your experiments to the group, then go quiet and listen while they help you make them smaller, stranger or more contradictory.
Go deeper: the 3-module Deep Dive
Three more self-directed modules, just like the core six, that sharpen your sense-making, deepen your self-awareness and rewire how you think about causation, so your judgement holds up when the pressure is real.
Core outcomeRecognise the difference between sense-making and analysis, and use it to catch your own blind spots before they cost you.
Individual exerciseTake a judgment you're currently holding about someone or something, build the case for it, then build the case for its opposite, and notice what each story lets you see.
Team exerciseHold a team conversation on a live question, then debrief it three times: for the patterns, the outliers, and what no one mentioned at all.
Core outcomeRecognise the habits uncertainty triggers in you (e.g. chasing certainty, tightening control, reaching for quick fixes) and build the self-awareness to catch yourself doing it in real time.
Individual exerciseNotice the pattern you fall into when complexity increases, usually narrowing instead of expanding, and design one small nudge to catch yourself in the act.
Team exerciseTurn your back, literally, while your group discusses your strengths, your stretch edges and one possibility for growth, then return to hear it.
Core outcomeMove from hunting for a single root cause to shaping the conditions that make an outcome more likely: the shift from engineer to gardener.
Individual exerciseTake a problem you keep trying to fix by finding the one culprit, map the conditions feeding it instead (incentives, habits, constraints) and pick one you could tend rather than force.
Team exerciseMap the vectors pushing your team toward and away from a shared goal, then use the "dinner party" test to find the attractors and constraints you could safely nudge.

What a module actually feels like
Not a slide deck. Every module blends a short instructor video, a framework you apply to your own context, and a climate scenario to test it on.
-
Hour-long practitioner podcast interviews, every moduleAvailable in audio and video. Meet the full line-up below.
-
Mini-activities, not just readingCard sorting, flashcards and interactive images, built to practise each framework in a climate context.
-
Audio narration, every core lessonListen on a commute or a walk, every core lesson is narrated, not just written.
-
Climate-context scenario quizzesTest Your Knowledge questions are built from real climate and regulatory scenarios, not a generic quiz bank.

Frequently asked questions
Before you enrol
My employer hasn't approved a training budget — can I still do it?
Yes. Most people either expense it against an existing professional-development allowance, or pay the €995 themselves and make the case for reimbursement once they can point to the certificate. If you'd rather bring it to your employer as a budget line for your whole team, we can also structure flat-fee or funder-pays options — see below.
How is this different from a generic leadership course?
It's practitioner-led, not academic theory — every module pairs a framework with a real exercise you apply to your own context, plus a podcast conversation with someone who's used it. It's built by Climate KIC's Academy, with 15+ years of systems-change practice behind it, not a general-purpose L&D vendor or a free playlist. Whether you call it adaptive leadership or complexity leadership, it's the same skill: reading a system correctly before you act.
Is the certificate recognised by employers?
You'll receive the Adaptive Leadership for Complexity Certificate (a CKIC digital certificate) on completing all 9 modules, with CPD points available. We're backed by a 15+ year climate innovation network of 400+ partners, and we're pursuing formal CMI accreditation, targeted for 2027, happy to share where that stands if it matters to you.
Can my team, employer or a funder pay for this instead of me?
Yes. Teams can book flat-fee or per-seat access, ESOs and accelerators can access a funder-pays model through EU, Norad, GIZ or similar development finance, and development agencies can embed it as a project component. If you'd also like one of our practitioners to run the live team exercises for your group, ask about our guided facilitation add-on. Tell us which applies and we'll point you to the right option.
Self-paced or live — which is it?
Self-paced, throughout. All 9 modules, the 6 core and the 3-module Deep Dive, are built for you to work through on your own schedule: podcast, lesson, individual exercise and assessment. The team exercises are where it really counts, though — they're built to work best with other people, since a peer or a small group pushing back on your thinking gets you further than working through it alone. You set the time, so there's no cohort to wait for, but if you want the fullest version, bring a colleague in, or ask your organisation about the guided cohort add-on, where one of our practitioners runs the live facilitation for your team. Just get in touch.
How long does it take?
Around 15–18 hours for the 6 core modules, plus roughly 7–8 hours for the 3-module Deep Dive — all self-paced. Most people complete the full 9 modules in 3–5 weeks alongside their day job, scheduling the live team exercises with peers as they go.
